IFRS Coming to America: On Track or Derailed |

We will discuss the changing political climate in the US and its affect on the implementation of International Financial Reporting Standards. Some have cast the blame for the deepening global financial crisis on accounting standards that require companies to revalue financial assets to market value every time they report their financial statements. Is this so? Does it matter whether US GAAP or IFRS were used? The new political power in the US has resulted in an appointment to head the SEC, Mary Schapiro, who is not a big IFRS proponent. Will her appointment as leader of the SEC result in a complete derailing of the US move to IFRS? Or, will it slow the process, create more order, and provide time for the US GAAP and IFRS convergence projects to gain more momentum? |
